Meara Platt & Once Upon A Regency

One Upon a Regency Box Set

Meara Platt – Wish Upon A Kiss

Blurb:

Lady Winifred Kingsley’s birthday is almost upon her and her three godmothers have gone off overnight to one of the large market towns to purchase something quite special for her upcoming celebration. But as soon as they’ve gone, odd things begin to happen and Winnie suddenly finds herself alone and her life in peril. Duke Ardaric does not reveal his true identity to Winnie when he rescues her, for theirs is a chance meeting – or so he believes. But as the attempts on Winnie’s life persist, he finds himself drawn to the young beauty and vows to protect her. He will not leave her side until the fiend who seeks to do her harm is captured and Winnie is once again safe. But will his heart ever remain safe?

Wish Upon A Kiss Excerpt:

“What is that sound?”

“Trouble,” the stranger replied in a husky rumble, speaking to Winnie for the first time. “Run. I’ll hold them off.”

She turned toward the Kingsley manor house, but he caught her by the elbow and nudged her in the opposite direction. “No, to the May Fair. You’ll be safer amid the crowd.”

Her heart caught in her throat. “What about you?”

He withdrew the gleaming steel sword from its scabbard and twirled it as though it weighed no more than a delicate meadow flower. “I’ll find you once I’ve chased the demon away.”

“Demon, indeed,” she muttered, for peering back at her through the silvery green leaves was what appeared to be a pair of blood-red eyes. In the next moment, she heard the crack and splinter of branches as the wild creature tore out of the woods and lunged straight for her. Why me? She let out a shriek, tripping over her own two feet as she backed away and fell in an unladylike sprawl on the ground.

I’m a May princess! I can’t die today!

She tried to roll to her feet and run, but the hem of her gown tangled in her delicate slippers and she was left thrashing on her back unable to get up as the foul-smelling thing came perilously close.

“Hellfire! You’re a clumsy little thing,” the stranger muttered, obviously exasperated with her, although his voice was deep and remarkably comforting. “Stay down and don’t move.”

He sliced his sword blade through the air with lethal precision as though experienced in battle. Had he fought against Napoleon on the Peninsula? No doubt he must have participated in several major naval battles or other perilous engagements, for this was a man who understood danger and knew how to meet it head on. Winnie closed her eyes and covered her head as though that alone would protect her from harm.

The menacing growl suddenly became a chorus of growls as more creatures — a pack of wild dogs, perhaps — lunged at her savior, who now stood in their way. Those growls quickly turned to shrieks as the animals fell upon the stranger’s blade.

Winnie heard thrashing sounds, and then all went silent but for the soft whoosh of the wind rustling through those silvery green leaves in the thicket of trees. She dared to open her eyes as the silence persisted.

“Princess, are you hurt?” The stranger knelt beside her to help her up, but must have thought better of touching her and eased back slightly instead.

Her heart was still racing as she struggled to her feet, and her hands trembled as she began to wipe dirt off the delicate outer layers of lilac and blue sarcenet veiling that adorned her gown. “No, I’m quite well.” Her voice cracked. Fear of being ripped apart by those animals had turned her throat dry, but as she glanced around all appeared serene. One would think the encounter had been nothing more than a bad dream, for there were no injured dogs and no sign of blood. “Thanks to you. Just a bit shaken, that’s all. I’ve never been saved by a pirate before.”

B&NOnce Upon a Regency Cover

Once upon a time nine historical romance authors created a world with the timeless romance of Regency and the enduring love of a fairy tale…

Resisting Romeo by Samantha Grace

There was much excitement yesterday at the Clarendon Hotel when a French actress interrupted a tête-à-tête between two of London’s most eligible bachelors and quietly exchanged words with them. Mr. Russell Hawke was quick to escort her from the premises, making witnesses wish they had remembered to bring their ear trumpets to tea.

Enchanted by the Earl by Amanda Mariel

Lowly seamstress Rose Woodcourt shocked society by capturing Hunter Thorne the Earl of Aubry’s heart after he banished her personal wolf.

Wish Upon A Kiss by Meara Platt

Young ladies from the best families are clamoring to become May Princesses now that Winifred Kingsley, a young lady of little consequence, caught the eye -and captured the heart – of Ardaric, fourth Duke of Blantyre when he spotted her dancing about a maypole in her shockingly scanty costume.

A Duke Worth His Salt by Allison Merritt

Lady Eleanor Mortin managed to snag the reclusive Duke of Greenebuck, who is not only writing fairy tale endings for his novels these days, but also living one with his new bride.

Masquerading as a Miss by Ari Thatcher

Just weeks after he was reported as drowned in that shipwreck, Lord Spalding appeared with a mysterious young woman who claimed to not know who her relations were. I daresay she has none and is eager to secure a match with Spalding, who as you know will one day inherit the earldom.

Searching for my Rogue by Dawn Brower

Upstart American, Alys Dewitt snared the Duke of Weston, one of England’s most sought after bachelors proving love is descending us all into madness.

The Enchanted Cave by Sue London

Irish lass Maeve O’Malley landed a blow to the hearts of innumerable smitten girls when she tangled Mr. Galen Mornay into knots of the nuptial variety.

Taming Beauty by Lynne Barron

Not only did the scandalous Lilith Aberdeen manage to bring the beastliest of barons up to scratch, but she did so only days before Lord Malleville was to marry her sister.

Stealing a Lady’s Heart by Tammy Andresen

Lady Charlotte Beaumont, first cousin to the Prince Regent, was seen gallivanting through Scotland with four eligible bachelors and no chaperone. This shocking lack of decorum is not the first from the lady but most certainly the worst. One simply must wonder if nuptials are soon to follow.

Resisting Romeo by Samantha Grace blurb:

French actress and aspiring playwright Claudine Bellerose recently closed the curtains on a bad romance and has returned to center stage at a small London playhouse where she is about to premiere her first production. Enter Russell Hawke, the new owner of the Drayton Theatre, to deliver disturbing news. If Claudine’s play doesn’t turn a profit, he’ll have no choice except to close the theatre. To further complicate matters, her leading man just suffered an accident and can’t perform. Russell is confident he is capable of stepping in to star opposite the lovely Claudine, but she quickly realizes his horrible acting is threatening to turn her romantic play into a farce. Her only option is to tutor him in his role, and hope she can resist the charms of this handsome Romeo.

Samantha Grace

Resisting Romeo excerpt:

The women took turns showing her how to punch, block, and evade capture if a man leapt out of the shadows.

“Miss Darlington was a splendid teacher,” Rachel said, “but I don’t see how a woman is supposed to flip a man to the ground if he attacks from behind. Won’t he be too heavy?”

Claudine smiled, recalling she had asked a similar question of Regina. “You don’t actually lift him. You throw off his balance. Size can work in your favor. The bigger the man, the harder it will be for him to catch himself, especially if he doesn’t have use of his hands. Let me show you.”

She waved for Anastasia to come forward for a demonstration. Claudine chose her, because she was nearly twice Claudine’s height. Anastasia often stood in for one of the male parts in shows simply because she was tall. A bit of make-up, padding, and a hat could hide her beauty well enough to make it somewhat believable, if she didn’t have many lines.

“I want you to grab me from behind,” Claudine said. Anastasia’s blond eyebrows shot up on her forehead. “I promise not to take you to the ground. I only want to show everyone the steps again.”

“Would you like an actual man for the demonstration?” Mr. Hawke called from the floor.

A delicious shiver ran through her at the thought of him touching her. “That isn’t necessary, sir. Ana will work well enough for our purpose.”

“I wouldn’t mind,” the actress said.

Rachel raised her hand as if Claudine had asked to take a count. “I would like to see Mr. Hawke stand in. I would feel more confident if I can see it is possible with a real man.”

The others agreed.

He was already climbing the stage stairs, and she couldn’t think of a valid excuse to refuse his assistance. Her body tingled in places she really wished it wouldn’t, as his long legs carried him across the stage with a stride that was deliberate, yet unhurried. When he stopped in front of her, a broad smile spread across his face and revealed a dimple in his left cheek. “I am at your service.”

“You may take my place,” Anastasia said and rejoined the group.

Mr. Hawke claimed Anastasia’s spot on stage. “Did I hear correctly that I am to grab you from behind, Miss Bellerose?”

“Yes, Mr. Hawke,” she said, adding in French, “and you better not enjoy it.”

He laughed. “I promise to despise every moment.”

She flinched, having forgotten he could understand her.

“I told you I studied French,” he said. “I also know German, Portuguese, and Spanish. Can you speak with an American accent? I barely understand a word they say. That would be a safe bet if you want to insult me without me becoming the wiser.”

He winked and the other women giggled.

“I wasn’t insulting you,” she said for the benefit of her fellow actresses. If Mr. Hawke closed the theatre after all, she didn’t want to be blamed.

“No, you didn’t, Miss Bellerose. I simply was offering you options in case you want to abuse me in the future.”

She wrinkled her nose at him. “Merci.”

She only knew French and English, and a few German words Tilde had taught her. Growing up, her father had always spoken French to her. He’d never stopped missing his native land, but as he’d often reminded himself, there was nothing left for them in France. Claudine was an infant when her father fled their home with her. When she was old enough to understand, Papa told her about the unrest in France and the rumor that he was to be called before the Tribunal. He said Maximilien Robespierre used the trials as an excuse to execute his political opposition, and Papa had been vocal in his commendation of the violence.

She and her father had arrived safely in England, but a distant cousin turned them away. Papa had always said he left everything behind except his most precious treasure. Sometimes he would pretend he couldn’t remember what it was and ask her to guess. She knew he was teasing about having forgotten, because at night, he would tuck her in bed and whisper, “Mon trésor.” Claudine had always felt fortunate that he loved her as he did.

She took a cleansing breath to bring herself back to the present, and turned away from Mr. Hawke. “Whenever you are ready, I want you to pretend to attack me.”

It must be instinct–or perhaps boys were taught how to grab a woman as part of their education–but it seemed all men tried to hook a woman around the neck when he meant her harm. Mr. Hawke was the exception. He draped his arm across her body, cradling her against his firm chest. His gentleness caught her by surprise, and instead of trying to break free of his hold, she closed her eyes and sank against him.

“If you promise not to hurt me,” he whispered in her ear, “you may take me to the ground.”

Sacre bleu. He smelled magnificent, like a cozy wood fire on a cold night blended with a hint of spice. She swallowed hard and nodded. “W-when a man grabs you, try to get your hand between his arm and your neck, so you have a little room to breathe.” She demonstrated as she walked through the steps. “Now hug his arm to your chest and duck low, throwing your shoulder forward and thrusting out your leg.”

Mr. Hawke pitched forward, tripping over her leg, and landed on the stage with a thunderous bang. She gasped as he winced.

“Mr. Hawke!” Rachel rushed to kneel at his side. “Are you hurt?” She glared at Claudine. “Look what you did. What were you thinking?”

Claudine was frozen, unable to speak or move. He peered up at her. She braced herself for the insults and derogatory names that were sure to come. Any moment she expected Mr. Hawke to rail at her–to shout insults and call her names.

He laughed.

RITA-nominated historical romance author, Samantha Grace, discovered the appeal of a great love story at the age of four, thanks to Disney’s “Robin Hood”. She didn’t care that Robin Hood and Maid Marian were cartoon animals. It was her first happily-ever-after experience, and she didn’t want the warm fuzzies to end. Now that Samantha is grown, she enjoys creating her own happy-endings for characters that spring from her imagination. Publisher’s Weekly describes her stories as “fresh and romantic” with subtle humor and charm. Samantha describes romance writing as the best job ever. Part-time medical social worker, moonlighting author, and Pilates nut, she enjoys a happy and hectic life with her real life hero and two kids in the Midwest.

She was a fallen woman when she met them. How can they help her fall on her feet?

Book Blurb

Becky is the envy of the courtesans of the demi-monde – the indulged mistress of the wealthy and charismatic Marquis of Aldridge. But she dreams of a normal life; one in which her daughter can have a future that does not depend on beauty, sex, and the whims of a man.

Finding herself with child, she hesitates to tell Aldridge. Will he cast her off, send her away, or keep her and condemn another child to this uncertain shadow world?

The devil-may-care face Hugh shows to the world hides a desperate sorrow; a sorrow he tries to drown with drink and riotous living. His years at war haunt him, but even more, he doesn’t want to think about the illness that robbed him of the ability to father a son. When he dies, his barony will die with him. His title will fall into abeyance, and his estate will be scooped up by the Crown.

When Aldridge surprises them both with a daring proposition, they do not expect love to be part of the bargain.

Excerpts

Excerpt 1 (391 words)

Aldridge never did find out how he came to be naked, alone, and sleeping in the small summerhouse in the garden of a country cottage. His last memory of the night before had him twenty miles away, and—although not dressed—in a comfortable bed, and in company.

The first time he woke, he had no idea how far he’d come, but the moonlight was bright enough to show him half-trellised window openings, and an archway leading down a short flight of steps into a garden. A house loomed a few hundred feet away, a dark shape against the star-bright sky. But getting up seemed like too much trouble, particularly with a headache that seemed to hang inches above him, threatening to split his head if he moved. The cushioned bench on which he lay invited him to shut his eyes and go back to sleep. Time enough to find out where he was in the morning.

When he woke again, he was facing away from the archway entrance, and there was someone behind him. Silence now, but in his memory the sound of light footsteps shifting the stones on the path outside, followed by twin intakes of breath as the walkers saw him.

One of them spoke; a woman’s voice, but low—almost husky. “Sarah, go back to the first rose bush and watch the house.”

“Yes, mama.” A child’s voice.

Aldridge waited until he heard the child dance lightly down the steps and away along the path, then shifted his weight slightly so that his pelvis flattened, dragging the rest of his torso over till he was lying on his back.

He waited for the exclamation of shock, but none came. Carefully— he wanted to observe her before he let her know he was awake, and anyway, any sudden movement might start up the hammers above his eye sockets—he cracked open his lids enough so to watch through his lashes.

He could see more than he expected. The woman had a shuttered lantern she was using to examine him, starting at his feet. She paused so long when she reached his morning salute that it grew even prouder, then swept the beam from the lantern up his torso so quickly he barely had time to slam his lids shut before the light reached and lingered over his face.

Author Dawn Brower and a contest

aflawedjewel_600x900
Today I have the pleasure of having Dawn Brower on my blog. Her first book, A Flawed Jewel, released on April 4th, everyone will get the opportunity to win a copy of the book. Details are at the end of the blog post.

Tell us what inspired you to write your first book?

I was talking to my step sister on the phone and she told me I should try to write one. To make a long story short she had read a few subpar ones and believed I could do a better job. I had a rough plot in my head before I ended the call. After I finished my conversation with her I started working, creating characters, and making rough notes. In less than twenty-four hours I had an extremely rough draft written. After a few beta reads and a lot of revisions I sent it into Breathless Press.

You wrote your first book what’s next?

A can of worms was ripped open by writing the first book. I never intended to write. Now I can’t seem to stop. I started working on another book and researching ideas after I wrote A Flawed Jewel.

Can you tell us about them?

I have a book coming out on September 4th, Cowgirl Fever. It is a little different than A Flawed Jewel. It’s contemporary where A Flawed Jewel has pirates and is historical. A Treasured Lily is coming out in January, and continues on in the world of A Flawed Jewel.

How is writing a historical different than a contemporary?

No matter what, research needs to be done. Some people may not realize it, but a lot of research needs to go into writing a book. It could be a little line, but it needs to be double checked. I searched for hours just to see how long it would take a ship to cross the Atlantic on wind speed. There was no definitive answer so I had to do math. *shudders* Nautical miles are different than regular miles, which meant I had to convert the distance in miles to nautical miles. Once I had that answer I had to divide that by how many nautical miles they traveled an hour and so forth to get a rough estimate. In Cowgirl Fever I had to research wild life on the west side of the country because I am not familiar with what is out there. The only thing I can say for sure is it’s easier with contemporary only because I don’t have to think about my word choices as much. Sometimes a word or phrase can be too modern for a historical novel.

So are you going to write any more historical books?

Yes, actually I wrote another two books in the world of A Flawed Jewel. A Treasured Lily is contracted with Breathless Press. It is about Thor and Pia’s daughter, Lily. A Sanguine Gem is with my beta readers and is about their son Liam. My current project Perceptive Soul is set during WWII with a lot of twists and turns.
Will you write any more contemporary novels?
Yes. I have two more books planned in the world of Cowgirl Fever. I have not finished them yet, but they are next on my agenda once I finish Perceptive Soul.

Thanks for joining me on my blog today.

All right, now for how you can win a copy of A Flawed Jewel
