Excerpt:

Sarah pushed out a sigh as Lord Luvington lead her toward a stone bench nestled among the lush green hedge.

“Shall we sit for a moment? I wish to explain.” He pressed his arm against her hand then loosened it again.

She looked away. “Very well. Though I cannot imagine what you might say to change things.” Sarah hesitated for a moment, reluctant to release her grip on him before she lowered herself onto the bench. The stone’s cool exterior seeped through her skirts, a welcome contrast to the warmth radiating through her. She rested one hand on her lap and waved her fan with the other.

Lord Luvington positioned himself on the bench a smidgen closer than was proper, angling himself so that he faced her. The fresh spring scents of foliage and flowers took on a heady intensity. She stared fixedly at the hedge in front of her. Her face flamed though she could not credit it to the heat of the atmosphere.

She needed to take control of the situation before it swept her away. “Speak your piece and be done with it. I do not wish to linger here over long.” He flashed a toe-curling grin just before she glanced away.

“What I said in the park was the truth. Is the truth. But there is more to it than just my need of a respectable wife.”

“Do tell.” She lowered her fan to her lap, its ribbons trailing in the breeze, and locked her gaze with his.

“I have come to care for you, admire you, even. You’re a fascinating and attractive woman.”

She plucked at her satin skirts as the heat climbed back into her face.

“It is true that I will not inherit the duchy without a proper society wife. It is the very reason I began looking for one. I shall not deny it, but nor is it the reason I continue to pursue you.” He reached up and brushed a curl that had escaped her bonnet away from her cheek.

His fingers left a tingling trail in their wake, and something inside Sarah began to crumble. She glanced down at the path they had just walked.

“I would like the chance to make this right. Allow me to court you, Lady Sarah. Let us discover if there might be something real between us.”

She glanced at him, unsure how to respond. Her mind screamed no, but her heart and soul begged for him. She wanted to reach out and run her hand across his strong jaw, feel his lips pressed against hers, discover what it felt like to be in his arms.

“Spend the rest of the party in my company, Lady Sarah. Grant me one afternoon to change your mind.”

A wave of tingles ran down her and congregated in her abdomen at his smile. This was dangerous, and she knew it. And yet…

“I do not believe you have any honor, my

Pearla Montgomery is nursing a broken heart. She was set to marry the Duke of Huntly only to have her wedding halted before they finished saying their I do’s. Her intended’s presumed dead wife interrupted the nuptials. In order to get away from the scandal she flees London. She meets a man that she could possibly give her heart to, but is afraid of letting anyone in. Running away starts to become a habit she can’t break.

Damian, Conte Leone falls in love with Pearla the moment he meets her. Even if they met under the worst circumstances. Unfortunately for him he is the brother of the woman who interrupted Pearla’s wedding. A little detail the love of his life can’t seem to forget. Even if he has to chase her to the end of the world and back he will not give up on her. Damian sets out to win her heart and nothing will stand in his way.

They have many obstacles to overcome, but the biggest is Pearla’s own fears.  Can Damian convince her to let him into her heart and trust he will keep it safe always?

Excerpt

A small groan filled the silence. Perhaps she should check on her cabinmate. Who knows what they did to the poor soul. Pearla knelt down beside them. She rolled him over onto his back. Sunlight spilled across his face and she sucked in a breath. He had an angry knot swelling across his forehead, but everything else about him was perfect. He had inky black hair that curled around his shoulder. His face was almost too pretty to be considered handsome. She brushed back his hair to get a better look at his injuries. He moaned with her ministrations. His eyes flew open and she once again got the breath knocked out of her. His eyes were so beautiful. They were a silver gray that sparkled in the sunlight.

“Who are you?”

“I should be asking you the same. Why would Captain Blythe toss you in a cabin with me and lock the door?” Pearla shook her head. “What did you do to anger him?”

More importantly what had she done to deserve such ill treatment?

“I had the audacity to disagree with his boss’s treatment of my sister.” His eyes narrowed. “What did you do to anger him?”

She chewed on her bottom lip. “I don’t have any idea.”

“What is your name?” he asked.

She shook her head. “You first.”

He chuckled and then winced with pain. His hand flew to his forehead. “Fair enough. But have pity on me. I have one bloody hell of a headache.”

A smile twitched on her face. “I reserve the right to make life as difficult as possible sir. I do not know you.”

“I think I like you.” A cocky smile filled his face. “I am Damian Leone or Conte Leone if you prefer formality.” He lifted his hand and traced his fingers across her cheek. “If I get a choice I’d have you call me Damian.”

She raised an eyebrow. “Just Damian?”

“Yes. I have a feeling you and I are going to be spending a lot of time together.”

Pearla frowned. “I hope not.”

“Does my company displease you that much?”

No, how was she to explain it had nothing to do with him. This whole mess was not his fault at all. He was quite charming and beautiful to behold. She would have been entranced with him under other circumstances…

“It has nothing to do with you. I have to get out of this cabin.”

“I hate to tell you,” he paused and sat up, “but we are not getting out of this room for some time. The ship is already sailing out of the harbor.”

Pearla cursed and stood up. She headed over to the porthole and looked outside. The blasted man was right. They were already well on their way out of the harbor. How long had she been in the cabin before they tossed him inside with her? It didn’t matter. They were stuck together. She’d just have to make the best of it.

“Come cara and tell me how you found yourself in the company of such disreputable ruffians as those in the employ of Paolo, the Duca d’Sordillo.”

“Who?” Pearla sat down on the bunk and huffed out a breath. “I’m not familiar with that name.”

“No?” Damian frowned. “That doesn’t make sense. Why would they stick you with me? Tell me your story maybe I can figure it out once I have all the information. Why are you on this ship?”

“It’s kind of a long story.”

How to explain her failed wedding to a stranger… It wasn’t something Pearla looked forward to. She didn’t even want to think about it let alone put voice to it.

“I have nothing but time cara.” He waved his hand toward the porthole. “I think it’s accurate to assume we will be confined to each other’s company for the foreseeable future.”

“Quit saying that,” she demanded.

“What?” he asked, confused.

“I am not your darling.”

“Ah” His lips tilted into one of his half cocky smiles. “You have yet to tell me your name. What else am I to call you?”

Why did he have to have a valid point? More importantly why did she still refuse to tell him her name? Maybe it was the fantasy of it. There was a certain romanticism to it all. Instead of telling him her name she told him her story. This was exactly what she needed upon further reflection. A stranger was much easier to talk to then friends. Gemma had meant well but she could see the pity mixed with concern in her eyes.

“Today was supposed to be my wedding day,” she began. When she finished a loud whistle filled the room and then he cursed more colorfully than she had.

“Bloody hell you’re Miss Pearla Montgomery.” He scrubbed his hands over his face. “It all makes sense now.”

“Well I’m glad you understand what is going on.” She crossed her arms across her chest and glared at him. “I sure don’t. I’m as confused as ever.”

Like how the hell did he know who she was? She hadn’t mentioned names. All she told him was her fiancé’s presumed dead wife interrupted her wedding. The desire to leave England had made her jump on the first ship available. Had rumors spread that fast already?

His next words made her heart almost stop.

“Rubina is my sister.”

She had the worst luck of anyone alive. Only she would have the misfortune of being stuck in a room with the brother of the woman who’d ruined her life. Someone out there truly hated her…

Can love’s legacy bring two war weary souls together?

Drawn by a flicker of light coming from the ruins of Babylon Castle, Rebecca Sumerfield is driven to investigate. The last thing she expects to find is the castle’s owner, a Captain in the British Army. Still devastated from her brother’s death in battle, she despises all things military.

Having survived Waterloo, Captain Camden Le Bec isn’t in the market for romance. He stops at Babylon Castle, the perfect place to gather his thoughts, only for the spirited Rebecca to storm his castle and demand he leave at once. Her fearless defiance and selfless heart awaken a desire Camden has never known. He’s determined to possess her, but Rebecca refuses to risk another broken heart.

Will they find solace in each other’s arms, or has war pushed them both beyond any hope?

Excerpt:

A sharp intake of air drew his attention across the stable. He glanced away from his task searching for its source. His heart skipped a beat. A woman stood in the doorway, pale skirts billowing in the breeze. He did not believe in ghosts but the woman before him fit the description he’d been given of Lady Nicola Aubrey-Thorne. She was tall and lean with honey-colored hair and piercing green eyes. The sun’s rays cut through the fog casting her in an eerie glow. He blinked but she did not disappear.

Once he recovered from the shock, he noticed her modern clothing. The lady wore a flowing mint day gown with a high waistline and short sleeves. A bonnet framed her heart-shaped face, its ribbons tied beneath her chin. She was no spirit. He opened his mouth to speak.

She marched toward him, wagging one gloved finger. “You have no right here, intruder. This is private property. I insist you gather your mount and depart.”

Her fearless approach held him captive. He studied her tall frame and blazing eyes, her words barely registered through his fascination. What had she called him? An intruder?

She came to a halt before him placing her hands on her hips. She peered at him through the loveliest green eyes he’d ever beheld. “What have you to say for yourself?”

“Are you the owner of this castle?” He searched the depths of her gaze.

She steeled her back, anger flashing in her eyes.

“Answer me!” He rested one hand on the wall leaning against it.

“No, I am not the owner.” She pointed one finger at him holding it just inches from his chest. “But neither are you.”

He could have set her straight right then. Told her he owned Babylon Castle. Instead he smirked, the urge to bait the chit too strong to ignore. “In that case it seems you are an intruder.”

Her cheeks tinted a becoming shade of pink, yet she did not avert her gaze. “I have far more right to be here than you do.”

He dropped his hand from the cool stone wall and took a step closer to the spirited beauty. Her scent wrapped around him, enticing his senses with lavender and jasmine. It had been a long time since he’d smelled a woman’s flowery scents. “How so?”

Camden expected her to back away at his intrusion of her personal space, but instead she held her ground, those stormy eyes never leaving his. “Not that I owe you an explanation, but I reside in the area and saw light coming from the windows last evening. I felt it my duty to check on the castle.”

“And your husband allowed you to march over here and confront an unknown intruder?” The words left his mouth before he had time to consider them. It was a pointless question. He did not care whether she was married or not. Courting was the furthest thing from his mind.

“My parents did not know my intentions.”

A smile spread across his face of its own volition though he could not imagine why. He certainly did not want the viper-tongued lady for himself. Still, he rather enjoyed verbally sparring with her. He angled his head so his lips hovered just in front of her ear. “I could be dangerous.”

She flinched but did not step away from him. “I am not afraid of you.”

“You should be.” He straightened, meeting her gaze once again. Not a hint of fear reflected back at him. The chit was either daft or made of steel.

“I will not allow you to intimidate me.”

He leaned back against the wall, his gaze locked on hers. “I am Captain Camden Le Bec, descendent of Sir Kenton Le Bec and rightful owner of Babylon Castle.”
