Genre: Historical Romance, Victorian

Blurb:

A wallflower by nature, Jane long ago accepted she would become a spinster. Perhaps such a fate was for the best. After all she’d witnessed firsthand how miserable marriage could make a lady. Still she dared to dream-that is until she finds herself thoroughly scandalized by a lord with the manners of a wild boar.

After Caleb Wesley, Lord Keery, failed to protect the one person who’d counted on him, he embraced his role of blackguard. He holds his vices close-light skirts, gambling, and liquor-and has no intention of giving them up. Even after he accidentally ruins a lady and is forced to offer marriage.

Two people brought together through an unwanted circumstance discover something neither one believed they’d ever have. Can they let go of their old hurts and beliefs long enough to embrace the gift fate bestowed upon them?

Scandalous Wallflower

Excerpt:

He glanced at the mussed bed, then raked his gaze over her body before meeting her eyes. “It seems you welcomed me with open legs, madam.”

The chill in his tone sliced through her. To think she was bemoaning the fact they had not made love mere minutes ago. Anger flared to life, burning her from the inside out. She jabbed finger into the bone and muscle of his chest. “That is an invitation you shall never receive from me! You are a blackguard unfit for the company of ladies.”

“If that is true, it is a damn good thing there are no ladies present.” He pulled his shirt over his head.

“There seems to be a shortage of gentleman as well.” She bent to retrieve his breeches before flinging them at him.

The door swung open behind her, spinning her around. To her horror, her brother and his wife had entered her room, worse still, the Countess of Bailey, an older woman renowned for her gossiping, stood wide-eyed in the hallway. The blood drained from Jane’s face as she averted her gaze to the pained glass window wishing she could fling herself out of it.

“Explain yourself,” her brother, Henry, demanded of Lord Keery. Claudia remained behind her husband, her hand on her chest and her mouth agape.

Jane’s heart pounded head spun with all the excuses she could make, but no words came. Nothing she could say would make any difference. She stood in the middle of her room in nothing more than a chemise with a more than half naked man. Hells bells! She was ruined. Her cheeks burned with embarrassment.

Claudia moved to the door and pushed it shut, closing off the Countess’s view as well as any other houseguests who may come upon them. “Do lower your voice, Henry. Is it your wish to see Jane ruined?”

“Keery has already seen to that, I daresay. Bloody hell, the countess stood witness to this…this atrocity.” His attention remained riveted on Lord Keery. “You took advantage of my sister. Have you nothing to say?”

Jane found her strength and rushed forward. “All is not as it appears. I swear it on my life.”

“Silence!” Henry bit the word out from between clenched teeth, his eyes burning with unsuppressed anger.

Jane pressed her lips together, but stood her ground. She could not allow Lord Keery to shoulder all of the blame for their predicament—not when she’d been a willing accomplice.

Henry removed his glove and slapped it across Lord Keery’s cheek. “I challenge you to a duel.”

Lord Keery stepped back to lean casually against the dressing table. “There is no need for that, Shillington, for I intend to do right by your sister.”

Jane’s stomach lurched as she took in his words. Doing right by her could only mean one thing. Lord Keery wanted to marry her. An hour ago, she would have thrilled, but now the prospect terrified her. She fought through the fog and pinned Keery with her gaze. “I would not marry this scoundrel were he the last man on earth.”

Her brother jumped in, his gaze as condemning as her own. “You forfeited any say in the matter, dear sister, the moment he entered your chamber.”

Keery shook out his wrinkled breeches. “I will procure a special license right away.” He pulled them on, tucked in his linen shirt, and secured them. “Just as soon as I find the remainder of my clothing.”

Jane fisted her hands, wanting to scream. How could he be so casual? His nonchalance further enraged her. He no more wanted to wed her than she wanted a rogue with the manners of a wild boar for a husband. Fuming and flustered, she went about the room collecting his garments before pushing them against his chest. “Do not bother. I refuse to marry you, regardless of what my brother demands.” Even as the words left her mouth, she knew they were untrue. She could not refuse his offer when doing so would bring shame upon her entire family.

Henry took hold of her arm and gave a gentle shake. “That is quite enough, Jane. You will marry Keery. Not another word from you unless it is ‘I do’.”

Lord Keery, clothing in hand, moved toward the door. Before he took his leave, he turned back and flashed her a rakish grin. “It seems you do not have a choice in the matter, my future bride.”

Jane was perplexed and enraged by his contradictory behavior. Why offer her marriage to save her reputation one moment only to ruin her good name the next moment by leaving her room in so shocking a state of undress? “Surely you do not intend to go out there like that.”

His mouth hitched up into a devilish grin. “Whyever not, when you are already compromised?”

And, at that, he took his leave.

The Duke’s Accidental Wife by Erica Ridley: Miss Katherine Ross keeps clashing with the insufferably emotionless Duke of Ravenwood. She’s convinced his heart is ice — until she touches that chiseled chest for herself. One lapse in judgment is all it takes to turn both their lives topsy-turvy…

The Forbidden Duke by Darcy Burke: A decade ago, Titus St. John’s idle roguery brought about the ruin of Eleanor Lockhart—and his self-imposed isolation. Now she’s back, and she needs his help. But by “saving” her, the Forbidden Duke may ruin her life all over again.

The Dangerous Duke of Dinnisfree by Julie Johnstone: Justin Holleman, the Duke of Dinnisfree, protects his country, king, and heart with classic, cold calculation until the day he’s forced to seek help with a dangerous mission from the fiery Miss Arabella Cartwright who upends his ordered world and entices him at every turn. Arabella learned long ago to count only on herself, but when she becomes a pawn in a political intrigue, she must rely on Justin, but is he her enemy or her ally?

Love with an Improper Stranger by Barbara Devlin: When notoriously hotheaded Nautionnier Knight Blake Elliott, fifth Duke of Rylan, volunteers for a mission, his magnanimous gesture does not include acting as nanny to a couple of blushing sisters. After Lenore suffers a wicked bout of seasickness, Blake nurses her back to health but loses his heart in the process. What happens when Blake alters his course and sets sail for an altogether delectable, more permanent destination?

Taming a Duke by Tammy Andresen: Piper Baker must marry but the only man she wants, an English duke who has traveled to America to replenish his fortune, is the one she can’t have.

Rapunzelle by Caroline Lee: When a handsome stranger arrives in town trying to solve a fifteen-year-old mystery, even the most over-protected heroine knows how to let down her hair… An old-west fairy tale from the bestselling Everland Ever After series.

Scandalous Endeavors by Amanda Mariel: Lady Amelia’s willing to create a scandal to stay in her beloved England. A Scottish duke ignites her passion, but will she abandon her endeavor for love?

The Duke’s Fiery Bride by Hildie McQueen: The last thing Gavin Mackinnon, the Duke of Selkirk expects is marriage to a rebellious wildling like her. Or is Beatrice Fingnon exactly what he needs?

In winning the dare, will she also lose her heart to the duke?

Today the spotlight is shining on Tammy Andresen and her Snow White inspired novella Hunting for a Lady’s Heart.

Excerpt from Hunting for a Lady’s Heart:

Stepping out from the trees, William caught his breath. A maiden of unearthly beauty came into view with raven hair simply tied back in a red ribbon that shimmered in the light.

Her delicate features were illuminated by the sun as was the subtle grace of her body as she reached down and plucked a mushroom from the ground. For an instant she turned to face him and he nearly caught his breath.

Large luminous grey eyes shone brightly in her near alabaster skin. Full red lips played with a small smile as she glanced around her. Though Will could feel no breeze, it was almost as though the trees danced in response as the large willows swayed around her.

A tinkling laugh like a bell fell from her lips and several birds tweeted a response. It was almost magical. Picking another mushroom, she did a little twirl as she laughed again.

Chuckling himself, Will watched as she danced and laughed, birds twittering around her. Up till that moment, Will had thought that his brother Graham’s wife, Charlotte, was the fairest maiden in all of England, but he had been wrong. This woman was fairer than Charlotte even, and her beauty drew him to her as he silently began to move through the forest toward the glen where she danced.

It was a pull unlike anything he had ever experienced. Like an actual force, it carried him closer to the opening of trees. He had no plan, no idea why he moved toward her or what he might say but he had the unmistakable need to be near her.

And then he heard it. The crunching of leaves nearby that signaled someone or something else was nearing the glen. Will froze, his eyes scanning the trees. In horror he saw another huntsman raise his bow, his arrow trained on the beautiful girl dancing amongst the willows.

The trees stilled, their branches dipping low and the other man’s eyes narrowed, his shot more difficult. But Will had a perfect view of him. Raising his bow, he released his arrow. It wasn’t a kill shot, it wasn’t meant to be, and it hit its target exactly where it was supposed to, in the thigh of the other huntsman.

The man let out a cry and fell to the ground. His maiden turned, fear filling her face as she gasped aloud.

“Randolph,” she cried, moving towards the injured man.

“My lady,” the huntsman gasped and Will raised his bow again.

“Do not move any closer to him, my lady.” Will’s voice was even as he trained the tip of his next arrow on the man’s heart. From the corner of his eye he saw her stop.

Question & Answers with Tammy Andresen:

Q1-What fairytale did you choose for your inspiration and why?

Snow White inspired my fairy tale, not for the heroine but the hero! My story is part of My Fairfield Fairy Tale series that features four brothers. This brother is the huntsman.

Q2-What was your favorite fairytale as a child?

My favorite was The Little Mermaid. Spoiler alert, that tale will be featured in the Fairfield Fairy Tales soon!!

Q3-What is your favorite line from your book?

Asking me to pick on favorite line is like asking me to pick my favorite child!! But I’ll try!! Here goes: “I listened to you. You are my heart.” Eirwen leaned her forehead against his shoulder.

The Fairy Palace.jpg

Today the spotlight is shining on Sue London and her The Fairy Palace inspired novella The Fairy Palace.

Excerpt from The Fairy Palace:

Oscar stared out the window, waiting for dawn to tint the sky. Earlier, Melanie and her maid chatted and giggled between themselves for a time, but sleep claimed them in the wee hours when the carriage was gently rocking and the sky was dark as ink. Usually he would sleep as well, but just now he was wondering what in the bloody hell he’d gotten himself into. It was perhaps unfortunate that his driver and valet were fairly well used to decamping in the middle of the night, and not even the two young ladies in tow had received so much as a blink. Was he known to be so craven that nothing was a surprise anymore? He had, for want of a better word, kidnapped a lady of gentle breeding for unknown purposes. By God, he would make sure that her next household would defend her with some aplomb. Not that the lady herself had put up any resistance to his plan, and he would grant that most servants would prefer not to cross a duke’s son. But to let her be so casually abducted? Abominable.

It didn’t pass his notice that he was criticizing the servants for not stopping him from something he could have chosen not to do. But dammit, Melanie deserved better than a husband that she couldn’t even feign a liking for. He was aghast that willful, spirited Melanie sat there on her bed and spoke of growing up and leaving behind her dreams. Would Arthur give up on Camelot? Of course not. How, then, could she give up? He wouldn’t let her. He had, in fact, irrevocably changed the course of her life this night, with no idea of how that might play out. All he knew was that this Mr. Hartley couldn’t have her. Not if marriage to the man meant she gave up her dreams.

However, as the sky tinted with soft light and he could see her dozing on the opposite carriage bench, he began to doubt himself. What did he know of how to navigate polite society? Yes, he could be charming, and his last name opened a multitude of doors. But a young lady would need savvy to land a reasonable husband. She needed her reputation, flawless etiquette, and excellent sponsorship. God’s blood, he couldn’t spend five minutes without running afoul of polite rules! Primarily on purpose, but it still made him a poor gallant to escort an unmarried young lady. He should be protecting her reputation, not hying her off to London in the middle of the night.

She looked surprisingly sweet and innocent in sleep. Her dark lashes lay like tiny fans on her cheeks, and her mouth was curved in an enigmatic smile to rival Mona Lisa’s. It was almost hard to believe that she could steal a whole tray of tarts, or climb trees for the express purpose of making Lady Eunomia demand she come down. He smiled as he remembered her youthful indiscretions. She was a mix of wild and sweet, like a potent elixir. He loved her. He loved her, and would not stand idly while she made a loveless match. He would not be able to live with himself if a marriage broke her spirit.

Question & Answers with Sue London:

Q1-What fairytale did you choose for your inspiration and why?

The Fairy Palace of the Quicken Trees, one of the tales in the Fenian Cycle of Irish myths that focuses on Oscar, who is our hero this time around. It is used very metaphorically, however, because I can’t have a Regency hero literally kill the King of the World.

Q2-What was your favorite fairytale as a child?

One of my favorites is The Princess and the Pea, which my husband says is very fitting because I can’t sleep if there is the slightest discomfort. (That’s his perspective. Since I have photos of him literally sleeping on rocks and Igloo coolers I say HE is the crazy one.)

Q3-What is your favorite line from your book?

If this was truly what ladies were wearing in Town, then she had to question their refinement.

Today the spotlight is shining on Ari Thatcher and her The Nightingale inspired novella His Elusive Nightingale.

nightingale

Excerpt from His Elusive Nightingale:

Something about the tall, incredibly handsome man walking away bothered Kitty. Bothered was an appropriate word in more ways than she cared to admit. His wavy brown hair wasn’t very different to every other man, but the way it fell over one eye made her want to push it back from his forehead, perhaps testing its silkiness by sliding it through her fingers as she did. It was his eyes…his eyes and his rugged jaw…and—No, it was only his eyes. Blue like the sky after the rain, much brighter than a typical London day. In their depths, she watched his frustration grow and felt some slight guilt for being the cause of it.

A very slight amount, however, because Jemina’s safety came first. Kitty’s former employer didn’t wish to perform any longer, so there was no reason for anyone to know her current location.

On the other hand, he might have something important to tell her. Maybe someone owed Jemina money; that would come in handy while she wasn’t working. She might have a family she never mentioned who’d left her a fortune. A true friend would make certain this man wanted something other than that before turning him away.

Kitty rushed after him. “Sir. Sir, wait!”

He finally heard her and halted. When she caught up, she noticed how thin his lips were as he waited for her to speak.

“I might be able to take a message to Miss Abreu-Cuevas.”

“As I told you, I must speak to her directly.”

“I can’t help you if you mean her harm.” She closed her eyes after she said it. Such a foolish statement. He wouldn’t admit to wanting to hurt Jemina.

Mr. Lennox’s features softened, making him even more handsome. He brushed her cheek with his thumb. “You had some dirt…”

She shivered and longed to turn her face into his warm touch. He was dangerous, much worse than someone who threatened her outright. He could sweet talk her into things she’d never do. She should walk away.

“I believe the news I bring will please her. I can’t know that until I speak to her, however. Shouldn’t you allow her to decide if she’ll see me?”

The noise of the market rang in her head, making clear thought impossible. She needed to go somewhere quiet—alone—to think this through. Her gut gave her an answer when her head wouldn’t. She wouldn’t take the risk with her friend’s safety. “I’m sorry, I can’t help you.” She spun on her heel and pushed her way through the crowd.

“Wait!”

She didn’t. She didn’t walk faster, though, since her curiosity was too great. If Mr. Lennox wanted to find Jemina badly enough, he’d tell Kitty what she needed to know. A moment later his hand clamped on her shoulder. She jerked away, her heart racing. Had she incensed him too far?

“I can pay you for your help,” he said.

“You’d pay me just to show you where she lives?”

“To show me where she is currently staying,” he clarified. Those Rs rolled gutturally.

“And what if she won’t see you?”

“I imagine I might be willing to increase your reward if you can persuade her to speak to me.”

The offer of money made her salivate. Since Jemina no longer needed her to clean, keep her gowns in perfect condition, and style her hair, Kitty had resorted to helping Mama with the washing she took in and selling posies in the market. She even sewed for a few ladies, although she had a difficult time keeping her blood off their fabric each time she pricked her finger.

The fact he offered her money made her more suspicious, however. She couldn’t bring herself to betray her friend’s privacy. “I cannot help you. Good day.”

AileenQuestions & Answers with Ari Thatcher:

Q1-What fairytale did you choose for your inspiration and why?

I chose The Nightingale because I loved the challenge of making the bird with beautiful music into a lady. Adding in the search for the nightingale made it so fun!

Q2-What was your favorite fairytale as a child?

Probably Cinderella, although I loved any that had witches involved.

Q3-What is your favorite line from your book?

Searching Convent Garden market for a one-eyed man with a limp selling fried eels from a cart was a first for Malcolm Lennox. (I know I should look for something romantic, but I love that one!)

Excerpt from A Diamond for a Duke:

Wending between the numerous pieces of furniture in the moon’s half-light, Jules smacked his shin into the settee. Pain spiraling from calf to knee, he softly cursed and bent to rub the offended limb.

“Dammit. Must Theo constantly rearrange this room? Two hell-fired times since December.”

A startled gasp, swiftly stifled, had him jerking upright, whacking his shoulder this time.

Bloody hell.

“Who’s there?”

Silence met his inquiry. Had he stumbled upon a lover’s tryst? A thief? A wayward servant or inquisitive guest? He fingered his throbbing shoulder, pressing the pads against the pain.

“Reveal yourself at once.”

Silence.

Running his fingers along the settee’s back, he located the pedestal sofa table.

Other than shallow breathing, the culprit kept quiet.

Squinting, he made out a light-colored form reclining on the dark blue and silver striped cushions. A woman, and by all the stampeding elephants in Africa, he bet his silver buttons, and the two new bruises he surely sported, he knew who laid there.

Like a slowly uncoiling rope, the tension eased from his taut muscles.

He fumbled a bit until he found the engraved silver tinderbox beside the candelabra and moments later, a wax taper flared to life.

“Hello, Your Grace.”

Miss Jemmah Dament, her rosy lips curved upward in a small closed-mouth smile and her face still sleep-softened, blinked groggily.

Hello, indeed. Adorable, sleepy kitten.

He lifted the candle higher, taking in her svelte figure, her delectable backside pressed to the sofa, one hand still cradling her cheek. Surprise and carnal awareness, pleasant and unexpected, tingled a rippling path from one shoulder to the other.

The plain, awkward little mudlark had transformed into a graceful dove. One who rivaled—no, by far exceeded—her sister’s allure.

“Well, hello to you as well, Miss Jemmah Dament.”

As if it were the most natural thing in the world to be found napping during a ball at her aunt’s house, and then awoken by a man crashing into her makeshift bed, she sat up and brushed a wayward curl off her forehead.

Jules set about lighting the other three tapers. Their glow revealed striking pale blue, wide-set almond-shaped eyes, fringed by dark lashes, and tousled hair somewhere between rich caramel and light toffee.

He hadn’t seen her up close in—

How long had it been?

Cocking his head, he searched his mind’s archives.

At least since last summer.

Yes, that afternoon in August; in Hyde Park, when she’d walked past wearing a travesty of a walking ensemble. A sort of greenish-gray color somewhere between rotten fish and bread mold.

Yawning delicately behind one slender hand, she smoothed her plain ivory gown with the other.

Except for a yellowish-tan sash below her breasts, the garment lacked any adornment. The ribbon didn’t suit her coloring, and although he couldn’t claim to be an expert on feminine apparel, the frock seemed rather lackluster for such a grand affair.

Another of Adelinda’s cast-offs?

As he closed the tinder box, Jules canted his head.

He couldn’t recall ever seeing Jemmah wearing anything new. And yet her sister always appeared perfumed and bejeweled, attired in the first stare of fashion. Such blatant favoritism wasn’t uncommon amongst the elite, nor did it shock him nearly as much as appall.

He, too, was his mother’s least favorite child, but by all the candle nubs in England, if he ever had children—in the very distant future—they’d not know the kind of rejection and pain he and Jemmah had experienced because of their parents’ partiality.

He’d love and treat his offspring equally as any good and decent parent should.

“Ah, Your Grace, you’re surprised to see me, I think.”

Questions & Answers with Collette Cameron:

Q1-What fairytale did you choose for your inspiration and why?

I chose Diamonds and Toads (Also known as Toads and Diamonds and Les Fées because rather than a wicked stepmother and stepsisters, the heroine’s mother and sister are the villains. I thought it made for an interesting change.

Q2-What was your favorite fairytale as a child?

Sleeping Beauty has always been my favorite fairy tale. I think it’s because I like the name Aurora!

Q3-What is your favorite line from your book?

I adored this line from A Diamond for a Duke: Jules planted a broad palm on her spine—Oh, crumb cakes, what utter deliciousness—and cupped her hand in his other.

16406921_1862900847328013_8806549715148164856_n

Excerpt from The Ugly Duckling Debutante:

Gennalyn quickly tucked her diary within the folds of her gown to hide it from view. Her heart beat a little faster as she watched Roarke Hawthorn tether his horse to a nearby tree and then stride toward her. His blond hair appeared quite golden under the sun’s rays that shone upon his head. She waited for the inevitable halo to form around his thick mane, for he looked remarkably like a mythical Greek god marching with victorious confidence down from the heavens. “Lord Hawthorn, is there a reason you’re here and not greeting your adoring throng at the manor house?”

His warm brown eyes gleamed in obvious amusement, but she couldn’t overlook the intelligence behind those dark orbs. “They can wait a little longer.” His manner was thoughtful as he knelt beside her and held out his hand, palm up, for one of the ducklings on her lap to hop on. It was a casual gesture, one that revealed much about his honorable nature, for he obviously had a gentle manner with animals. He hadn’t bellowed or raged at Sebastian even though the cantankerous bull had given him a good scare.

She’d heard he was a war hero, which probably meant he’d earned the trust and admiration of the men who’d served under him. Did this man have any faults? She was determined to find one because she hadn’t noticed any yet and didn’t want to like him. “I wish you’d go away.” The quivery catch to her voice made her wince.

His steady presence and the comfort he offered were stirring up sensations that she never dared feel again. She was surviving in her cocoon and didn’t want this well-intentioned man to shake her out of her hiding place.

“I know you don’t want me here.” He cast her a boyish grin that quickly turned into a look of tender regard. “But I’m too dense to take the hint. Why aren’t you at the party, Gennalyn? Do you have any intention of putting in an appearance?”

“No. They don’t want me around.” She shrugged her shoulders. “I’m happier out here.”

“Me too.” He set the duckling back on her lap and then stretched his lean, muscled body on the grass beside her, propping himself on his elbows while he studied her. His manner appeared casual, but she knew he was anything but that. This was a man with keen instincts, no doubt finely honed in the heat of battle, for it took more than dogged determination to stay alive while others all around you were intent on cutting short your life.

She began to fidget, all too aware that he was still looking at her. “This party is in your honor, my lord. Everyone will be quite put out if you’re late.”

He glanced at the manor house in the distance before returning his gaze to her. “They’ll manage without me a little while longer.”

“Indeed, you are dense.” Why had she captured his interest? What more could she do to push him away? That determination of his might have served him well in battle, but she didn’t appreciate that it was now turned on her. “Please run along or I’ll be blamed for your tardiness as well.”

He arched an eyebrow. “I’ll go, but only if you promise that we’ll meet again. Soon. Tomorrow. I’ll meet you in my cow pasture at midday.”

She gave a snorting laugh. “Why would you want to see me again? I’m not pretty. I’m not immensely wealthy. And I don’t like you.”

His eyebrow shot up once more and then he let out a quiet rumble of laughter. “Gennalyn, I find you refreshingly charming.”

She sighed. “No, you don’t. You find my behavior odd and think there’s a deep, compelling reason behind it that you must now discover. You’re the sort who enjoys challenging puzzles, but you’ll be disappointed. There isn’t anything mysterious or puzzling about me. Trust me on this and leave me alone. By the way, I’d rather you addressed me as Miss Beauclerk. We are not friends and I doubt we ever shall be.”

“Gennalyn,” he said with a rough and husky rumble to his voice, his amusement now vanished and only concern gleaming in his eyes, “something happened to you before you came here, something bad. It’s so obvious, your every word and manner fairly screams it.”

Her fingers trembled as she stroked the soft downy fur of one of the ducklings still curled on her lap. She shifted a little to nudge her diary closer, for she didn’t want him to notice it and discover her secrets. “What concern is it of yours, my lord?”

MearaQuestion & Answers with Meara Platt:

Q1-What fairytale did you choose for your inspiration and why?

I chose The Ugly Duckling because it’s such a wonderful theme. There’s a beautiful swan in all of us just waiting to be brought out.

Q2-What was your favorite fairytale as a child?

My favorite fairy tale as a child was Sleeping Beauty because I loved that wicked Maleficent and always wondered what her back story was that made her so evil!

Q3-What is your favorite line from your book?

My favorite line from The Ugly Duckling Debutante is: “They call me Ugly Duckling, even to my face. One would think they’d have the manners to whisper it behind my back.”

Today the spotlight is shining on Amanda Mariel and her Cinderella inspired novella Enticed by Lady Elianna.

entice_by_lady_elianna_1600x2400

Excerpt from Enticed by Lady Elianna:

“London is calling for me.” Garrett rubbed his hand across his thigh, brushing away a bit of dust. If not for his interest in Miss Elianna the party would hold no appeal for him. He found the rituals of house parties rather tedious and the gaming, liquor, and loose women at this one in particular were in short supply.

It was his sense that she was in danger that drove his interest in her—the adventure and excitement of saving a damsel. He’d still intended to enjoy himself during the party, at the least partake in good gaming and a delectable widow on the side.

“The devil you say.” Aubry stomped his boot, dislodging a clump of straw from the stables. “I rather think it would suit you to find some enjoyment here. Perhaps a proper lady to court and wed?”

Garrett raised a brow in mock indignation. “Whoever needs that when London is full of improper ladies to bed?”

“London will kill you yet, old friend.”

Garrett grinned with amusement. “But what a way to go.”

“I can see the gossip column now.” He waved his hand out in front of himself. “Garrett Tumbly, Viscount Sinclair, perished last evening with a belly full of port and a widow beneath him after having spent several hours at a popular gaming hell.” Aubry chuckled.

The familiar figure of Miss Elianna near the rear of the house caught Garrett’s attention. She wore a deep green gown with gold accents—the same shade she’d worn on their previous meetings. Peculiar for any woman. In fact, he’d never meet one whose frocks all bore the same shade.

Come to think of it, the Berkly servants wore the same colors. Deep green and gold were the earl’s livery colors. But Miss Elianna was no servant. She was a companion to Lady Caroline. Or was she? Had the ladies deceived him? Was that her secret?

“Ugh.” A huff of air whooshed from him when Aubry jabbed his elbow into Garrett’s side. Recovered, he turned to his friend. “Take care, will you.”

“What interest do you have in that woman?” Aubry asked.

Garrett shot him a scathing look. “I met her in London along with Lady Caroline. Something about her caught my interest but not in the way you suppose.”

“Do you mean to tell me you’ve met a woman worth more to you than a quick tumble?” Aubry jested.

“Last night’s port must have gone directly to your head causing lasting damage.” He glanced back at Miss Elianna. “I have no wish to become romantically involved with anyone here. There is, however, something the girl is hiding, and I intend to figure out what it is.”

“The party is not so grand that we should have a hard time discovering more about her. Tell me what you have to go on?”

Garrett’s pulse increased as he watched Miss Elianna making her way across the lawn, toward the house. His opportunity to speak with her again shrank with each step she took. Before long she’d be out of sight and reach. He turned his attention back to Aubry. “Later. For now, you must excuse me.”

Aubry gave a nod.

Garrett turned to follow Miss Elianna intent on charming her further—on discovering at least a morsel about her. Bloody hell. The woman moved fast. He pursued the area, searching for her as he strode across the expanse of lawn between him and the residence. She could not have gotten far.

A streak of green skirts caught his eye disappearing into the veranda doors and he hurried his pace. Another few strides and he too entered the house.

“Lord Sinclair. How nice to see you.” Lady Caroline traipsed across the parlor, her hips swinging seductively.

He locked his gaze on Miss Elianna, who continued making her way across the room. “And you as well, Lady Caroline, though I fear I am in a hurry at the moment.”

She placed her hand boldly on his arm, stilling him. “Surely you have a moment for me.”

Reluctantly, he turned to regard her and offered a smile. A pout tugged at her lower lip while her eyes danced playfully. He should refrain from being rude. Devil take it! She should not be approaching him in such an unabashed and inappropriate way.

He shook his arm free. “Perhaps later.”

“Lord Sinclair,” Lady Caroline called after him, an edge in her tone.

Excerpt from Stolen by My Knave:

The waltz was still considered scandalous. Elizabeth had never understood that until Jack placed his hand on hers and started the steps of the dance. They moved in unison. One stroke, another, and their bodies almost close enough to touch. His heat mingled with hers until she warmed unbearably. Her breathing hitched slightly when she glanced up and met his gaze. He’d been staring down at her and she hadn’t realized it until that moment. His eyelids were drooped low and seductive. She’d only thought she could feel his heat before—now it was spreading through her like rapid fire. It was a never-ending inferno of need, but what she wanted she wasn’t exactly sure. What she did understand, without a doubt—only Jack could give it to her.

Jack started speaking, bringing her back to reality. How long had she been lost in thoughts? His words weren’t a profession of undying love or anything near what she’d hoped for… “I’m not going to recite poetry or revel you with pretty words.” His gaze seared through her. “Promises are not something I give lightly.”

Jack spun her around with graceful expertise. She didn’t understand what he was trying to say to her and feared it was quite important. Her mind was wandering and her need was too great for her to focus. What was she supposed to do?

“Absolutely,” she replied for lack of something better to say. Why did he have such a blasted effect on her? How was a woman to think when she wanted to wrap her arms tight around a certain enticing gentleman and never let go?

His lips tilted upward. “You don’t understand, but in time you will.”

“I don’t need you to tutor me on the finer points in life.” Her irritation with him was growing to new heights. If he was going to spout inane drivel, she had better things to do. That wasn’t what she required of him.

“Oh, but you do, love,” he replied. Wickedness filled his grin and she forced herself to hold a shiver of anticipation in. “At least in one regard.”

“I beg to differ.” She lifted her chin defiantly. “You speak of promises not given lightly, and in the same breath make none. I believe you said you won’t give me poetry or pretty words—perhaps that is the unspoken promise.” Elizabeth leaned closer than the dance allowed and rubbed her thumb over the back of his hand. He clasped onto her hand tighter. “I’m not shy about saying what I want. Tomorrow isn’t promised, and that’s the only guarantee we have in life. That our fate is unknown and it is up to us to decide how we want to live our life. I didn’t ask you to make me any promises. In fact, I didn’t ask anything of you.” She stared into his eyes. “But I will, and when I do, I can almost guarantee it will scare you witless.”

“I doubt anything you could say would accomplish such a feat.”

She smiled. “The night is still young, Your Grace.” Elizabeth licked her lips. “Give it time.”

Question & Answers with Dawn Brower:

Q1-What fairytale did you choose for your inspiration and why?

My fairytale is Through the Looking Glass. I chose it because it goes along nicely with my story from the Once Upon a Regency boxset (which was based on Alice in Wonderland).

Q2-What was your favorite fairytale as a child?

The Little Mermaid. I loved Ariel, Flounder, and Sebastian. I could watch that move over and over again.

Q3-What is your favorite line from your book?

“You speak of promises not given lightly, and in the same breath make none. I believe you said you won’t give me poetry or pretty words—perhaps that is the unspoken promise.”
