Scandalous Redemption Revised

Excerpt:

Lord Henry Shillington strode across the music room of Lord and Lady Morse’s country estate intent on locating his sister. The force of someone bumping into him sent him stumbling backward. He whirled around, auburn curls catching his gaze as he reached out to steady her. “Excuse me.” He offered a slight bow but did not release his hold on her.

The lady peered at him through narrowed, fierce green eyes the color of emeralds. “You should watch your step. Kindly unhand me.”

Henry met her icy glare. She radiated the sweet scent of champagne. It clung to the air around her filling his senses as if she had used it for perfume. “Good God, you’re foxed.”

Her earbobs danced and sparkled as she leaned in close, the fire in her eyes growing more intense. “My state is not your concern.” She jerked free of his hold and took a step back. Her blue jewel-toned gown swooshed with the sudden movement.

He grabbed her arm, halting her. His pulse pounded through his veins. “You cannot stay here in your condition. You will cause a scandal for yourself and our hosts.”

“What concern is it of yours?” She rounded on him.

He had to prevent her from causing a scene. “Allow me to escort you outside. We can stroll through the garden.” Part of him worried for their hosts, Lord and Lady Wexil were dear friends, but, if he were being honest, he would have to admit he wished to know more about this beauty. Something about her captivated him. Perhaps her unusual eyes or the misery he saw in them.

A slow smile spread across her full lips. “Very well.”

She swayed and clung to his arm as he led her out through the veranda doors and into the country air. What would compel a lady to become foxed so early in the evening? The sun had yet to give way to the moon’s glow. And who was she? Surely, they had never met before.

He turned her down a path lined with flowers and green foliage. The details of who she was and why she’d overindulged did not signify. She was clearly in distress, and he intended to help if he could. He studied the profile of her delicate face.

“Might we sit…what is your name?” Her exhilarating laughter floated through the empty space.

He had never heard a sweeter sound. “Lord Shillington. And yours?” He stopped in front of a cast iron bench. He couldn’t look away as she lowered herself onto the seat in a flutter of skirts. She was a mystery he wished to solve.

“Do sit with me, Lord Shillington.” She patted the bench next to her.

Henry positioned himself near her, but not too close. Being out here with an unchaperoned lady was scandalous enough. It was not his desire to compromise her–or himself. Given her state, he had no choice but to remove her from the gathering. However, he also had a responsibility to control the propriety of his own behavior.

A cool breeze ruffled her elegant skirts, drawing his attention to her body. Heat fanned through him as he studied her. She was tall and lithe, yet she possessed curves in all the right places. He offered a polite smile. “Your name, my lady?”

She looked at him through hooded lashes. “Lady Claudia Akford.”

His heart skipped a beat as his throat tightened. The notorious Lady Claudia Akford.

Squee!! I am nomintated for a RONE!!

2013_RONE_Nominee_640Amanda Mariel here, talking about the prestigious RONE award from InD’tale Magazine. I am thrilled to be nominated for this coveted award!!!! Getting nominated for a RONE award is a huge deal for indie (independent) and small press authors. It is like getting a Grammy nomination.

Scandalous Intentions has been nominated in the novella categorie and is open to voting this week, May 16-27th! Click here to cast your vote for Week five

Scandalous Intentions

As a reader you may be wondering how a book gets nominated for this coveted award and how it wins. Allow me to explain. I took the following from InD’tale Magazine website:

“Each year InD’tale Magazine honors the very best books in the Indie and Small publishing industry by awarding the prestigious RONE award. To achieve this award, a book must go through the most comprehensive process in the industry today, with three distinct areas of focus.

  1. All books in each given year (January 1st – December 31st) must have been read and reviewed by our professional staff of reviewers and be given a four star rating or higher to qualify as a nominee.
  2. All nominees, with the exception of 5 star rated books which will automatically become finalists, must then be voted on by the reading public. The books with the highest number of public votes will progress on to become finalists.
  3. The finalists will then be read by a group of industry professionals consisting of editors, writers, professors etc. and be judged on a one to five scale from a specific list of requirements such as characterization, overall arc, editing etc.   Those scores will then be tallied by a professional company unrelated to InD’tale or its employees to determine the winner of the coveted RONE award, along with the honorable mentions.

All awards are announced at the annual RONE award gala event and ceremony and given the beautiful Crystal RONE award. This is a formal but extremely fun and entertaining night for all, one that truly honors all Indie and Small published authors, readers and professionals!”

The books that are nominated for this year’s RONE award have received top reviews from InD’tale’s professional staff of reviewers and are now onto step two. This is where YOU the readers come in. Each week a list of RONE nominated books in multiple categories are posted on InD’tale’s website and YOU the readers have an opportunity to go vote for your favorites.

Voting is easy and fun. You do need an account to vote but it only takes a moment to set one up and they do not spam you. Once you have an account you simply hover over the InD’Scribe/RONEs button in the top bar and a drop down list will appear. Choose the 2016 RONE awards option and a list of voting weeks will come up. Choose the current week and cast your vote. It sounds more complicated than it is and I promise you the authors will love you for voting even if you did not choose their book. It so certainly true of me, so please-GO VOTE!!

Review-Cold Hearted Rake

I recently read Cold Hearted Rake by Lisa Kleypas and loved it so much that I just have to share with all of you! This is a MUST read historical romance that kept me entertained, engrossed, and in love. West, the younger brother of the hero, Devon, was my favorite character and I do hope he gets his own book. I found endless humor in his antics and loved his character arc. Kathleen was brave and strong as she fought for what she thought right and brought Devon up to scratch in the process. Devon did come off as cold hearted in the beginning, but I liked it, and he warmed nicely. I found myself quickly rooting for Kathleen and Devon to get their happily ever after. The period detail was perfect-not to much and not to little-it really brought the setting and characters to life. I highly recommend you pick up a copy of Cold Hearted Rake and start reading!

Game of Graces

GracesWhen I was writing Scandalous Redemption I wanted to include a garden party game for my ladies to play. I did what authors do and set out to research games that were popular in the time period.

My research led me to the game of Graces. It was considered an appropriate game for ladies in the 1800’s and was thought to benefit ladies by making them more graceful.

In the game of graces each player would get two sticks. They would use the sticks to catch and toss a ring that had been wrapped in ribbon. The ring was launched by crossing ones sticks then pulling them apart to toss the ring.

Graces is a two player game that was rarely played by boys. When a boy did join in it was to play with a girl. Two boys never played graces together.

In Scandalous Redemption my characters Duchess Abernathy and Lady Akford play graces at a picnic that takes place during a house party. Here is a peek:

“Pay them no mind, dear.” Duchess Abernathy strolled up beside her. “I would bet half of them have their own scandals to hide, and the other half wishes they did. Let us engage in that game of graces we discussed and leave the ugliness behind?”

Claudia looked back at the group of gossiping ladies. Perhaps the duchess was correct, though she doubted it. Regardless, she reaped no benefit from allowing them to upset her. “I should like that.”

“Splendid.” The duchess nodded at an area of the lawn where the game of graces was set up before moving toward it. Sticks and hoops lay against the soft green grass.

“I have not played since before I married. Hopefully I am still a capable companion.” Claudia picked up her sticks in preparation.

The duchess launched a ring with colorful ribbon tied to it and laughed when it landed at her feet. “I fear your skills will not matter as I am out of practice myself. I may never get a ring to reach your sticks.”

Before long, Claudia was merrily catching and launching the hoops back and forth with the duchess. She reveled in the exercise and good cheer they shared. The duchess proved to be a worthy adversary, and Claudia quickly regained her skill too. She chatted and laughed with the duchess as they played, feeling normal for the first time in years. Almost as though she fit in among the ton as she once had.

The death and destruction of war can destroy even the strongest among us. Will the loss and pain be too much for Rebecca to withstand?

The year is 1941 and paradise is a way of life in Hawaii. For Rebecca O’Shea things couldn’t be more perfect. She has her dream career as a naval nurse, and is in love with the man of her dreams—it seems she has it all.
An empathic gift she’s had all her life starts to grow, showering her with emotions and premonitions that suggest a great darkness is near. Just when she thinks she cannot take anymore her guardian, Joel, arrives to help her.
Rebecca’s life is thrown into chaos when war hits Hawaii’s shore. As the Japanese bomb her home, her gift explodes within her. Loss and pain become her new way of life. She abandons all hope and shuts down her empathic abilities. With bodies littering the hospitals and seas, her calling as a nurse is put to good use, but her heart remains unreachable. Can she find her way out of the blackness and accept her true fate? Or will the prevailing death and destruction of war consume her?

Excerpt:

“Do you hear that?”

“It’s just some planes buzzing overhead. Navy’s probably doing some early morning drills.”

She tilted her head in confusion. “Are you sure? Sounds like an awful lot of planes.”

“The navy has a lot of planes.” His mouth twitched into a smile. Her stomach quivered, and she could feel it churning with disagreement.

“I have an uneasy feeling.”

Just as the words left her mouth, a loud boom rattled the cavern walls. The ground began to shake, and a few small rocks fell through the opening at the ceiling. She screamed and jumped off the ledge. Joel grabbed her and held onto her tight, preventing her from running through the dark cave.

“You don’t know your way out. Let me lead.”

Her mouth wobbled as tears fell from her eyes. “I’m scared. What is exploding?”

“Don’t worry. I will take care of you.” He pulled her into his arms. “I promise. It’s what I’m here for. It’s my job as a guardian.”

“How long have you been a guardian, Joel. I always meant to ask you that.”

“A very long time. So long, I don’t know if I remember what my life was like before I took my oath of duty.” He released her from his arms. “Come on. We need to see what is going on outside.

He led her out of the cave and into the open space of the lagoon. Above her, hundreds of planes flew overhead. Bombs were being dropped as they neared land. Gunfire exploded all around her.

“Someone is attacking us,” she shouted.

Red circles outlined in white decorated the wings and sides of the dark green planes. They dipped and spun as they flew by. Japanese, they were attacking Pearl Harbor and the islands of Hawaii. Hundreds of them flew over and around the island. They dotted the sky, heavy, loud engine sounds drummed through her ears.
